Isambulo launched in 2015 during the South Africa State theatre’s Mzansi Fela Festival. It had growth so rapidly and keeps attracting a new audience in theatre every year. It is now an annual show that runs every December in South African State Theatre. It grew from the audience of about 880 during its debut appearance in 2015 to having 4200 in its recent season
Isambulo is a dramatization of the typical Sunday church service in the township, it embraces the African way of spirituality and diversity, it is full of humour and encouragement, more than a drama it is actually a musical celebration in song. Written and directed by and award winning Zakhele Mabena. The cast consists of a 5-piece band and the cast of 25 musicians and actors on stage, It is a family show that keeps the audience on their feet and engaging for the whole 2hrs. It also addresses social issues like substance abuse, women abuse and gangsters.
